After 58 years of being a city, Iligan finally has a McDonald's. One progress at a time.

of the Dark Knight and Juan Luna
"The hero Gotham needs, not the hero it deserves" was the description for Harvey Dent. The people saw him as their hope and savior, even if he was the hero who became the villain in the end. His image of a hero, a good man, and an incorruptible person had to be maintained for the people not to lose hope. Harvey Dent was the exact description of the hero that Gotham wanted.
This brings to my mind the person of Juan Luna. I attended a talk done by Ambeth Ocampo, and as usual, he said stuff that history books never mention. One discovery I made was that Juan Luna murdered his wife and mother-in-law. His act was premeditated. It was not an act of passion. He deliberately killed them.
Ocampo said that facts like these are never mentioned because they tarnish the reputation of the hero. Heroes are people that everyone looks up to. Everyone wants to emulate the heroes. People might lose hope if they know their heroes are not that heroic after all (off topic: Ocampo showed a picture of Rizal, Luna, and others smoking pot... wahaha).
Maybe there is no perfect hero. The heroes in the Philippines may only be versions of Harvey Dent. Or maybe our heroes are exactly what the Philippines deserve, and we just distort their image according to what we need. Mga bayaning third world.

internet, internet
Where is the net? It's almost a month and the dorm still has no access to the internet. The only time I access the net is when I go to campus with my laptop and bum on the Hotzone wi-fi (and see a handful of dormers also bumming on the wi-fi), or when I go to the computer labs (like what I'm doing right now). Internet can be distracting... But there are times when I urgently need it, and it's usually the time when the guard in Kostka Extension says it's past midnight so I need to go back to the dorm. Another thing about having no net is that I get out of touch with the outside world. Many dormers don't have access to television (yes I know we have TV rooms in Eliazo and Cervini though not in the new dorm, but we don't usually watch TV). There are no newspapers in the lobby of the new dorm. I only get information because people talk about it (e.g., "barko ni Arnold nalunod!").
I'd like to borrow a quotation from Babette's Feast, and change it. Here it goes, "Throughout the residence halls sounds one long cry from the mouths of the dormers: Give us the chance to have internet"

What time is it? Summertime. It's our "vacation"
Random thoughts:
- New dorm. New room. New floormates. I wonder how the next two years will turn out.
- I must buy pirated DVDs. But I don't know what movie or series to get. Any suggestions?
- I don't know what free elective to get.
- Mga taga-Iligan, laag ta beh! Walay plano na mangaligo sa Timoga or maglakaw-lakaw lang sa siyudad?
- I'm writing this post in the wee hours of the morning. I should sleep earlier to readjust my body clock.
- I'm glad summer classes are over. I never felt the summer-ness of summer because of school. Last year, it was summer with classes. This year, it is classes during summer.
- SMEG semester is near. I feel anxious.
- My SIM city is improving! I slept at 4 AM yesterday because I was playing SC4000 and watching House episodes.
- I want to read more books! The only book I haven't read in my shelf is Don Quixote (which I still haven't returned to Kara). I'm still 1/4 of the way in Don Quixote, and I think I won't finish reading it during the 2-week break because it's boring.
- "I'm gonna find my purpose" (LSS)
- Who's the mother in How I Met Your Mother? I don't think it's Stella. Or maybe it's her.
- I hope my random number of 488 will still bring me okay classes.
- Arf arf. Bow wow.
- Meow.
